Are young adult books too dark?
In the reading "Darkness to Visible" Meghan Gurdon's view is that she wants a young adult book that doesn't contain anything too dark and in the reading "why the best books are written in blood" Sherman writes books for teenagers to help them stand up for themselves and fight their battles.
When Sherman was younger he had to deal with mental illness and abuse and he remembers what that feels like. He wants his readers to feel informed and create ideas for young adults to cope with it. He would get handwritten letters from young adults that loved his book. Over the years dark novels became more normal. Meghan feels that when young adults read dark books and are feeling sad they may get the wrong idea and harm themselves.
I agree with Sherman Alexie because he relates to young adults' lives. By writing about addiction and mental illness in his book "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" he can raise awareness about problems that people may be dealing with, and hopefully give them solutions about how to solve it. Going through the same issues as young adults can change the way young adults think and react to situations.
